Seattle, WA – Friends of Woodland Park Zoo Elephants will be out in force at the zoo’s biggest fundraiser of the year to remind Seattle taxpayers that their money supports animal suffering.

WPZ wastes up to $600,000.00 a year displaying three elephants in substandard conditions that compromise their health and welfare.

Bamboo, Chai and Watoto suffer from chronic foot disease—the leading cause of death among captive elephants. Experts worldwide agree that elephants need space to maintain their physical and psychological health. WPZ ignores the elephants’ most basic needs and confines them to less than 1 acre outdoors and in a tiny barn stall for 16–17 hours a day for over half of the year.

WPZ is also denying the elephants their only chance to heal by refusing to retire Bamboo, Chai and Watoto (at no cost to the City or WPZ) to the 2,700 acre Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.

Please join us on Friday to send WPZ the message that Seattle taxpayers do not want their money supporting animal suffering.

“Woodland Park Zoo is failing the elephants and Seattle taxpayers. It’s time for WPZ to join enlightened zoos across the U.S. and phase out their archaic elephant exhibit,” says Nancy Pennington, “Friends” Co-founder.
