Transport Crate to Ship out Bamboo and Chai is at Woodland Park Zoo – You can help!

Woodland Park Zoo announced on Feb. 27th that Bamboo and Chai would be moved to Oklahoma City Zoo. This decision clearly shows that WPZ does not make the elephants’ quality of life or health a priority. Once at OCZ, there will be 7 elephants in a divided-up 3.2 acres—less space per elephant than they have now. Oklahoma City’s climate is much colder and hotter than Seattle’s forcing the elephants to suffer an even longer lock up in a tiny barn.
With this decision Woodland Park Zoo has ignored science, Seattle’s Mayor and City Council, the media and the values of the community in which it resides.

Sending the elephants from Seattle to another zoo does not solve the problems, it just removes them from Woodland Park Zoo. These elephants belong in a sanctuary where they can freely live and have enough space and a better climate.
Dear public servants,
The decision to send these two elephants to Oklahoma City is abhorrent. I implore you to employ a different method of determining their future. The approach you have used is flawed. If it were not flawed, public outcry would be less pronounced.
Re-think this decision, please. Re-think the means by which the decision is made.
In short: Please begin again.
Sincerely,

Please, this is just continuing the problem. Why move them at all?
Please do the right thing and send the elephants to the sanctuary. They need space and a warm climate. Thank you.
I would like to see the WPZ elephants go to a dedicated sanctuary, not a zoo in a cold climate. Thank you.

It’s time we stop treating animals as disposable possessions. Elephants, in particular, are known to be intelligent, thoughtful and sensitive. They should be treated with the same respect and dignity that humans expect for themselves.
I beg you to move Chai and Bamboo to an elephant sanctuary!! Please don’t let them live out their lives in a cold, small area zoo! My heart is breaking to think they are going to yet, another zoo. I lived in SE Asia for two yeas and was fortunate to see elephants in their natural habitat- it was magnificent! Please do the right thing and stop their move to OK. Zoo, let them go to the sanctuary!!!

Dear Public Servants,
Please do not move these elephants to the Oklahoma Zoo. The weather in Oklahoma gets very cold in the winter and these animals are not accustomed to live in cold weather. Please stop this transfer and send these animals to live out their lives in a sanctuary.
The public no longer wants to see elephants in zoos and circuses as demonstrated by the announcement that Ringling Bros. Circus is phasing out their elephants from their shows.
I’ve seen the elephant exhibit in Oklahoma. If you haven’t I suggest you go there yourself before shipping these elephants in a crate for 30 hours. Once you see the space you will realize how inappropriate it is to add more elephants to this enclosure.
Please do the right thing and you will be hailed in the media and on social media.
Sincerely,
Gwen McKenna
